Have you ever watched crazy stunts on television or on YouTube and wondered who the insane people are that really do those things? More importantly, have you ever wondered why? Believe it or not, for some people, those crazy stunts are all in a regular day’s work. For others, of course, the stunts that you see them doing may be the result of a freak accident, or their own need for the resulting adrenaline rush, attention, or all of the above.
Most videos that feature crazy, death-defying stunts have warnings prefacing each shot, such as the ever-popular Don’t Try This At Home. These warnings are there for a very good reason. Professional stunt people not only put themselves in high-risk situations on an almost daily basis, they also work extremely hard to do so, by exercising and working out regularly, and by undergoing serious training in order to face the demands that are put on them.
Different stunt people have different areas of expertise. For instance, one individual may be particularly adept at falling down stairs or off of large buildings. Others may specialize in jumping out of moving vehicles, or leaping off of large buildings. Regardless of the skills in which they specialize, they are where they are because of a daily commitment to training the muscles required to execute the crazy stunts that they do safely, and accurately. In other words, the professional stunt people that we see in action movies are, in fact, highly trained athletes, that have chosen to use their skills for a very specific, albeit unusual, function.
There are also those extreme athletes that are specifically trained in a sport that requires crazy stunts. Consider, for instance, extreme skiers and snowboarders; these individuals voluntarily take jumps, do flips, and all kinds of impressive stunts, which strapped into their equipment. Other extreme athletes that the general population loves to admire and marvel at include gymnasts and dancers, to name only a few.
Of course, not every crazy stunt that you see is being executed by a trained professional. For some strange reason, people always seem to be drawn to those crazy stunts that intentionally of accidentally inflict pain and discomfort, and because of this continual demand, people will always have access to all kinds of real-life footage of crazy stunts. For proof of this assertion, just go to YouTube to see the real-life blunders or accidents that people are eager to share with the world.
One place to be assured of witnessing crazy (and funny) stunts done by regular people is on the television show America’s Funniest Home Videos. This show not only satisfies that strange desire to laugh at other people’s sufferings or mistakes; it is also a reflection on the human ability to laugh at oneself, and to find humor in virtually any situation. Think about it: A situation that could at the time be viewed as nothing but a serious and/or painful accident can, with time, be the subject of laughs and entertainment at one’s own expense.
